Does this childs parents want the school to help? I know that it's why he's there to start with, to learn to read. But some kids have learning problems and if they qualify, they have the right by federal law to have this help from the school.

Unless a child is recieveing special ed services, the school is not legally obligated to help with the problems. Oh sure they will 'say' they will help, but they usually won't follow thru because they know they won't have to without the child being in special ed.

If parents do want school to help, they first have to write a letter--

Dear (district special ed director)

I am requesting a full, comprehensive educational evaluation testing in all areas of suspected disabilities as specified by IDEA law.
My child is (name) in (grade) in (teachers name) class.
Here are the problems he is having:
(here, list all problems in school, at home, things teachers have said, etc)

I understand that according to IDEA law this evaluation can not be administered without written parent consent. Please consider this letter my written consent.
I also understand that the district has 60 days from date of my written consent to have all evaluations completed.

Please send me a list of all evaluations that will be performed for my child. Please send me a copy of the evaluation report with scores included at least 5 days before evaluation meeting.

Thank you,
parent name

if he is dyslexic you can try a couple things ( or just try no matter what his difference is).... first try having him read the words upside down.... another thing is make word cards but make sure you space the letters further apart..... an amazing program is published by SRA and it is simply called decoding strategy.... it is simple but it works for many of my students. Also try visualization have him imagine the word in some way (to difficult to explain through yahoo answers.

Yeah you probably want to have him tested so he can get some extra support but whomever said he might have autism makes no sense what so ever

Sylvan will give him one-on-one tutoring to improve his reading skills.

You could also have him tested for learning disabilities (i.e., dyslexia, etc.). Speak with the school's counselors on the latter.

Best wishes.

Sounds like he needs a thorough diagnostic workup. Whether he has lost his ability to read or whether he is hiding his ability for some reason, he needs a psychologist or psychiatrist to figure out why.

Perhaps he does not WANT to read? you can try to motivate him, like asking him what he wants to be when he grows up? examples:lawyer needs to be a really good reader, pilot has to be able to read symbols and messages from base, etc. when motivated, people can do great things.

With this kind of dysfunction, I would recommend having him tested for autism.
