Yahoo makes money by employing volunteers like you and I to use, test and complain about their programs, all the while pumping you and I with influential corporate promotions. Yahoo then charges those corporations with fees that go toward improving Yahoo services.
Some of those services are offered exclusively to particular users of Yahoo services, and while Yahoo is still working on developing rewards for Answers levels 3,4,6, and 7, the rewards for levels 2 and 5 are fully functional.
Another benefit is the phychoemotional "feelgood feelings" when someone gives you 5 stars and a big thank you for helping them.
The biggest obvious benefit of participation is your right to ask questions in return.
The biggest benefit overall, which is far less obvious, is the spiritual uplifting of the global consciousness and awareness of how things are in the world (what people think, how things work, etc, etc).
This gradual, subtle betterment will boomerang eventually, in an unexpected and helpful way at the exact moment when you need it most.
These factors are your "cut."

They make money on advertising. You don't get a cut. You get on here for free plus you get free entertainment.

For Yahoo, it is probably in Branding and Adverts.
Your cut is the miserable points you make, your promotion to a new level, the joy of making someone's day or annoyance as you may prefer; and intellectual & emotional diversions.
