Is there anything good about it? If you had to convince someone of the good points of materialism, what would you say?

The only people for whom the concept of materialism is beneficial are capitalists. About 1% of the American population. They argue that materialism is a good thing (and that is why the majority of the US economy depends on consumer spending), so that they can stay the richest 1%. The other 99% buy into the program (both metaphorically and literally), affirmed by the American cultural standard: success is demonstrated by the accumulation of material goods (SUVs, houses, boats, jewelry, clothing, etc).

It is motivation to do your best, and obtain status, which is ok, so long as it doesn't make you arrogant ;)
