I have a gentleman wanting me to pay him 3,801 gate or gait. Any ideas what he is asking for. I was expecting to hear the word ruppee.

It should be Cash which the pronounciation made it Gate - gait???
It cannot be Kaasu... because no one will be interested to say 3801 kaasu (paise) instead for 38 rupees and there is no 1 paise available, even it is, it may cost you 38 rupees!

There is no "gate" or "gait" in Indian currency. My guess is he said Kaasu which is Tamil for money.

No where such words, are used, in India, for Rupee. The nearest can be 'TAKA', which word is used, for Rupee, by people from Bengal, India. Incidentally, the currency operative, in Bangladesh, is TAKA.
