Look over what the teacher left you. Know exactly what you're going to do--especially your first class. Then prepare your area. Make sure the students know that you have all your ducks in a row when they come in. This will make them respect you. Don't try to super strict. That will cause the students to see how much they can upset you. I've know students that saw that as a challenge. But don't let them walk all over you. Stay humorous. That way you keep your cool, they don't see you as mean-but instead a little sarcastic (which is really good if you're sweet about it, because they enjoy you).
Sorry so specific, but I've seen subs come and go; some make me feel so sorry for them; and others just make me want to click my heels together three times.
