Algebra is a base mathematics which steps into more complicated types of mathematics. Understanding this level of math is essential to higher order types of math.
As for its applications alone, it is usually just helpful in balancing your checkbook, or understanding volume in economic situations, for example, if you can produce a product for 3 dollars and sell it for 5 if you produce at least 10,000 units, or if you can produce the same unit for 2 dollars if you produce 100,000 units, what is the profit gain in selling more volume?
but yeah, for the most part its a good thing to understand, as it makes harder problems in life simpler, and if you like science, then you'll want to understand algebra. Later in a mathematical career algebra will be essential.

Well first of all absolutely in computer programming. If you can't express what you want the computer to do algebraically then you're sunk.
Other careers, engineering, astrophysics, astronomy, actuary (computes probability for insurance companies), biology, statistician, loads of sciences, accident analysis (police work) and many others. Some of these pursuits are also used as hobbies.

It's not really considered a career by some, but I am a stay-at-home mom who LOVED algebra in school... and continue to use it frequently to figure out % off at a store & for our monthly family budget (just a couple examples). It just comes easier for me - jot out an equation and find out what "x" is.

To a limited extent.
Engineering in particular uses advanced mathematics and algebra
