Yes.

Anything the mother eats, drinks, smokes, or takes also goes to the baby because you share a blood stream (mostly). Your doctor or pharmacist should know that you're pregnant, and let you know if it's OK to take any particular medication.

It depends on the stage of pregnancy and the type of medication. The girl, or should I say, woman, needs to talk to her doctor about the type of medication because not a lot research has been done on pregnant women to learn about the risks to unborn babies (quite understandably).

It will be as if the unborn child is also taking the medicine. But if the woman is ill and does not seek treatment that can also harm an unborn child. Best to consult a doctor on specific illnesses and specific medications.

Drug manufacturers issue a Category Class for all medications. Those that have been researched, tested and used in trials that are safe for pregnant or nursing women carries a Category B.

I would not take anything, whether prescribed or over-the-counter (OTC), that is not a Category B class of drug. Furthermore, if it has not been prescribed or recommended by your Obstetrician, don't take it!

If they are taking prescribed medication then the doctor is going to give them a safe dosage.
An example of this is AZT, insulin, etc......

i would say if it's prescribed then no b/c the dr. looks out for the baby before they prescribe anything. and i would not worry about it. but if it's not prescribed then yes it really can hurt the baby and you need to watch out. but i wouldn't think that you would do that. i hope not anyways
