Francis Drake was an explorer. I don't recall learning about him studying the stars but it is possible. Back during that time period astronomy and astrology were very much intertwined. Also Francis Drake BEAT the Spanish Armada he did not lead it. Francis Drake was English not Spanish.

You sure you have the name right? Only Francis Drake I ever heard of was sir Francis Drake explorer during the 17th century I believe.
