I was always curious. Why does it burn? What chemical properties make it burn?

Combustion flames are broadly divided into premixed flames and diffusion flames. Premixed flames occur when fuel and oxidizer are mixed before they burn. Diffusion flames occur when fuel and oxidizer mix and burn simultaneously. The intermediate case, with partial premixing, has been of relatively low theoretical and practical interest. Flames are further categorized on the basis of shape, time behavior (stationary or moving), flow regime (laminar or turbulent), buoyancy regime (forced convection or natural convection), presence or absence of confinement (as by combustion chamber walls), and flow complications (such as swirling flow and crosswind).

A flame or flames are a radiation of electro-magnetic energy caused from the chemical reaction burning, different materials give off diffirent colors of light (electro-magnetic energy) thats how the colors are made in fireworks. The actual burning is created when heat is applied to a material until it loosens the molecular bonds that hold it together (melting point). The chemical reaction appears as fire and smoke.

The burning is because the combustion from the flame is causing a big release of heat energy. I'm no doctor, but I think when you come into contact with something really really hot and you get a big dose of heat, you get a burning feeling because you kill off some skin cells.
