I am considering getting a soapstone sink for my kitchen. I found one that I really like but met a woman yesterday that has a soapstone sink and it was in rough shape. She claims that she has tried every mild cleaner and nothing works. Is this common and does soapstone require any special care?

Yes, soapstone does require special care because is it a soft stone.

"Soapstone is a relatively soft stone that will be susceptible to scratching. Using cutting boards with knives, and avoiding abrasive cleansers and scraping heavy pots and pans along the surface will help reduce scratching. Soapstone has the unique characteristic that scratches that do occur may be buffed out with a fine grit (400 to 300) sandpaper, and then touched up with some mineral oil. Deeper scratches may require use of heavier grit sandpaper. If so, start with the heavier paper, and gradually work up to the finest grit to create a finish consistent with the rest of the countertop."

These sites give much more information about the care of soapstone. I hope this helps.

I don't know what they coat the soapstone with to protect it -- I have a soapstone sculpture that scratches very easily. I was told by the artist that scratchest should be treated with linseed oil.

I too have a stone sink. I have the slate gray color. I hate it. Nothing cleans it. It always has soap scum on it. I have tried everything. I love the sink itself, just not the problem with trying to keep it clean. It always has a white film on it, not sticky or slimey, just on it. Hope that helps some.
