The placebo effect is where someone takes a pill that they think is a great medicine, usually pain killer, and it works for them because they think it is suppose to. It really is just psychosomatic, it doesn't work they just think it does, so it does for them.

This usually refers to medicine. A placebo is something that you think is a medicine but is not, it's just something else that has no effect on you.
But if you think that you are taking a medicine for example and that it will have an effect of some sort, you might believe it is doing something for you and you might even get well.
You mind is a mighty thing, some times mind over matter works. I had a mother who dieing, but she didn't know it and so she fought it and lived for a long while longer.
Some people think that they have an illness and will have the symptoms etc. of the illness, even pregnancy.

placebo is like fake... so say you were doing a study on how a certain depression drug works, and you give half the people the real drug and half the people "placebo pills". then you see the results in the people who were on the fake ones and see if its all in their heads or if its just convincing the person that they are getting better when its really not doing anything and compare it to the people on the real drugs. get it?
