download install run gone
then
Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to reinstall then run avg again do not need to buy new drive then

Thats a lot of questions.

Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital are all good drives (same with externals as well as Acomdata). Just get the largest disc on sale or running a rebate special ... like at CompUSA. If yr not comfortable installing a hard drive yrself you can take the computer in and they will do it for you for not too much money. Give them yr XP disc too. They can then get XP SP2 on there for you as well. If you think you can do it yourself, just follow the instructions that come with the drive. Most drives today do not require additional formatting.

If yr old drive is copied over to the new drive it will bring the problems along, too, so sorry to say ALL yr data is going to need to be backed up first and reinstalled. Get a USB jump drive (Sandisk 1 GB is about $40 now) and copy yr data files to it. Yr software is going to need to be reinstalled and then copy the files back off the USB drive. If you get an external drive, too (not a bad idea) a USB drive is good if yr computer has USB 2.0. This type of external drive is plug and play, no installation necessary.

All this is a total pain no doubt. After you get everything re-installed get a back up program to "mirror" or "ghost" your drive onto your own "reinstall" CDs or to an external drive. Norton Ghost is a good program for this, but there are others that are cheaper shareware etc. FYI the external drive should be at least as large storage as yr internal so yr back up images fit!

Good luck.

If you have a virus infected hard drive, bringing files from the old hard drive to the new one would just bring the virus over, too. It would be easier to just clean up the virus - which you can do for free - than to spend all that money on new hardware.

Head over to http://www.symantec.com to get information on cleaning up the virus.

replace the drive, insert the restore disk, and turn the computer back on. Go to microsoft.com and download all of the patches they have built since the computer was built.
