I am a teaching fellow at university. I had a very small portion of students who are dyslexic. At first, I didn't know about it, and because they tend to be a bit slow in digesting the information we pass on during seminars, I just thought they are the weaker ones in the group.

Then I found a chance to talk to them, hoping to find out if there is a problem with my teaching. Only by then that I realise those few students have learning difficulties. They are also extremely hard working, and the university has allowed them some privileges to assist learning (e.g. longer library loan periods) It was a frank conversation with good results. I have given them a few pointers to improving study skills, and they have taught me how to teach better.

I was very disappointed that I, along with my colleagues, were totally not told by the department, to be aware of students with dyslexia. We were told that students may come from a diverse background, but the hint was more on the cultural side. It may be a breach of privacy, telling the tutors who has got what problems, but I was thinking that since dyslexia is something directly related to teaching and learning, we should have a right to know.

I have informed my superiors about the concern. By the end of the school year, they have finally sent out some general information of dyslexia, under the subject title 'you might like to know...' And they say they endeavour to give students appropriate support...

I think people bully those with learning difficulties mainly because they do not understand what that is. In casual conversations, among tutors, my colleagues, who did not know Student A is dyslexic, had made very inappropriate and probably offensive comments. Unfortunately, only I took the step to talk to Student A, and subsequently found out the problem. (ok, I am the nice one, because I think students deserve the best; I have had some very good teachers in the past)

And believe me, 80% of my colleagues did not even know what dyslexia was (before the 'you might like to know...' email), least spelling the word.

Nevertheless, I have made it very clear to my students that at the end of the day, I give marks to performance. I can allow them extra time to finish their work, but I cannot be generous with the marking. I guess this is how society works, that after all, you cannot abuse certain privileges.

Because they are arseholes, Just ignore and don't let it get to you, I know loads of people who have dyslexia, They were a few people with it in the marines whilst I was in and they were just as good at their job as anybody else. Just because somebody has learning difficulties doesn't make them any less of a good person.

The real bums are the ones who feel the need to take the piss out of somebody less fortunate than themselves.

Don't take any notice of people who make fun of you on here. When people are nasty like that it usually means that something is missing in their own lives, or that they feel insecure about themselves. Just ignore nasty answers, and enjoy all the good ones.

properly to every person who's calling you Billy, i'd not answer. Answering will basically enable thim walk over you. actually get someone to inform them your call, so as that way they received't ignore. Stuff like this basically pisses me off, previous persons imagine they can interrupt out with crap like this because they're elderly. Hell no. You deserve no a lot less appreciate than every person else. As to that ranch female who'll ignore something you tell her, I dunno thats a toughy. i might want to assert attempt to stay away from her, yet I doubt you're able to objective this. in my view Clare, truly than attempt to get those elderly people to appreciate you and call you with the help of your call and in no way tell ya 'the way you doin boy'.. i might want to heavily request for a move, and in case you may't do this discover yet another job interior an analogous field. Thats basically crap you shouldn't might want to manage any of that.

It's because they are just insecure and need someone to pick on. They think people with learning disabilities are an easy target. I have dyslexia and it was not picked up for years. My teachers just said I was careless. I'm now at university studying for my masters degree. If people laugh at you just walk past and think how sad they must be inside, if they call you names tell them to get stuffed!

you will always find nasty people, no matter what your strengths and weaknesses are. some of them are just ignorant, some of them are prejudiced and think your learning performance could affect theirs, some of them think that because you have learning issues you don't understand what they're saying anyway, some are just assholes who want to compensate for their own weaknesses by picking on yours and some probably don't even realise they're nasty. some of these people will listen if you just ask them for a minute of their time and tell them how their remark made you feel, and maybe ask them why they said it. with others, it's best just to ignore them. people worth knowing will not bully you but try to acquaint themselves with you properly and accept you for who you are.

Mainly because the abuser is insecure and needs to pick on someone they consider 'weaker' than themselves so they feel better.

Stupid I know, but its the same with the idiots who think that racism is acceptable.

Bullies are weak people and have often been bullied themselves,Maybe we should pity them as they are not strong enough to break the bullying chain.
Try not to let their negativity affect you.
SMILE you are STRONG and POSITIVE and have an intellegent and inquisitive mind.
