Try to remember that the group responsible for these horrendous attacks were extremists.
Their actions that day condemned Muslims to a life of fear and prejudice.
Why did they do it? I guess we will never know. Trying to understand it will only do our heads in. Don't let them win by letting them take over your life.

I know what you mean.
I was on my way to work that morning and saw it happen.
Anyone that had a hand in making it happen is a coward.
If you think about it, they failed. They didn't get the number of people they wanted to, they didn't ruin the economy, they didn't make people go into mass panic, etc...
In an odd sort of way, we get the last laugh because those terrorists are dead and can never hurt us again.
The best things we can do is honor the people we've lost and be proud we live in a country that values life, our freedoms and will do anything to protect them.
We are (and always will be) brothers and sisters to the 9/11 children and we will watch them grow up to be adults and have families of their own.
I am so glad I live in this country.
I will never succumb to that muslim garbage. I call on everyone else not to either. No REAL God tells people to kill and I will never be convinced that he does. And as long as no Islam leader PUBLICLY denounces the acts from 5 years ago, I will never see the religion as vaild.

i know exactly how you feel. We live in a civilization that is responsible for such great creations as those of Michaelangelo and Mozart, of Galileo and Shakespeare, of Washington and Lincoln and Churchill. Think of all the things we take for granted: electricity, medicine that has doubled our life expectancy, men walking on the moon. Now imagine another world. That world has not lived through our history. At one time it was a vibrant world, but for hundreds of years it has stagnated, crushed by the weight of an oppresive religion that dominates their world. Just as the schoolyard bully is usually an inferior person who makes himself feel more important through physical intimidation, this stagnant civilization seethes with anger. Using their religion as cover, extremists with no ingrained sense of fairness, the importance of a single human life or even any sense of decency faintly related to ours has the need to prove itself as superior to ours. Since we are the "Great Satan" any way they can "prove" themselves superior is justified.
It's still hard to understand, but it is important for us to realize that these people won't play by the rules, and will do absolutely anything, no matter how horrific, to destroy our civilization. This is what we saw on 9/11. If we want our way of life to continue, we will have to sacrifice much.

I copied this from a web page. The person is spot on the world better wake up. Here is a quote: "points the finger against a culture of hatred in which the uneducated are brainwashed to a level where their only solution in life becomes to kill themselves and kill others in the name of a God whose word, as transmitted by other men, has became their only certitude" For the interview go here. scary huh, the guy tells it the way it is, when will we wake up to the facts. They don't only like us they hate us Question are we going to do appeasement with them like certain nations did with Hitler, Stalin, and the rest of the killers?

Osama bin Laden the master planner of the 9/11 horror, in a number of interviews tapes and DVD's., provides the most authoritative answer to the Why of 9/11..
He says it is the duty of jihadists to kill the Jews and the infidels, which in his definition is everyone who doesn't share his extreme islamic view, Russians, hindus, other unenlightened moslems etc.. The US with its degenerate culture and superpower status is number one on his hit list. His stated objective is to resurrect an Islamic caliphate and bring Islamic law and culture to the world, replacing the immorality of western [and eastern] cultures. He singles out the US as the major enemy in this quest. He advocates that this objective be achieved by mass deaths including the jihadists themselves. He believes in death not only for his enemies but for his martyrs. Since most others believe in life, he is hard to understand or explain. He cares not a bit who die and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of practicing moslems.
Because his objectives are based on his twisted fanatical religious beliefs, his followers follow out of faith. History is replete with the power of fanatic religious belief to brainwash people to perform unspeakable acts. We afre faced with a twenty first century version of this phenomenon.

My answer is that they felt that they and their fellow Muslims had suffered many repeated instances of humiliation and powerlessness. Humiliation that was caused by people they consider inferior to them in history and culture. Frustration from seeing their people suffer from the lack of educational and economic opportunity, and oppression from brutal dictators who were seen by them as puppets supported by the very Western governments they resented. Resentment at seeing their friends and family die fighting to regain their land and civil freedoms only to hear the Western media describe them as terrorists who were justly killed in retaliation of their terrorist acts or the deaths of innocent civilians as "collateral damage." Desperation at experiencing all of the above and not being able to successfully do anything about it. Becoming more and more humiliated, powerless, frustrated, angry, resentful and desparate under the power and influence of people who they are convinced repeatedly engage in duplicity, deceit, dishonesty, depravity, gluttony, perversity and all else that is impure and unholy. To understand this is not to justify their barbaric acts of murder against innocent people but simply the mentality from which their hatred is born and repeatedly reinforced in the militant fundamentalist Muslim schools, families and communities in which they live. The frightening truth is that many of us, if born into the same society, would have developed into harboring many of the same thoughts and feelings. Even more sobering, is the fact that, albeit on a much lower level of intensity, many of us already have some of these thoughts and feelings towards those we view as undeservedly having more money, power and/or influence than we do. Viewed in this light, we begin to see that perhaps they are more like us than different from us. If we were to somehow put ourselves in their place, how would we want us to act. To continue to hunt, kill and oppress creating even more resentment and humiliation? Or to share our knowledge and experience on how we can all live a better life?

These were people with extreme beliefs. They believed so greatly in their cause that they were willing to do anything for it. This means mass and brutal murder, even if it means losing their own lives. These are very dangerous people.

This world is getting crazier, and crazier every day. One thing I can almost guarantee you, it's only a matter of time before yet another terrorist attack takes place. Who knows, it could be nuclear weapons this time.

Yes, it does seem insane for anyone to be willing to kill, or die for what they believe in.
