If you are asking about teenagers, alot do it to show that they are "Straight Edge" which means No Sex, No Drugs, No Alcohal.

And in some areas it also means no smoking.

The "X" on the back of a person's hand means that person is Straight Edge, meaning that they promise to stay drug and alcohol free for their entire lives, I just found that out last year. Hope that answers your question.
