what's inertia and how is it involved with newton's first law

Newton's first law of motion states that "An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." Objects "tend to keep on doing what they're doing." In fact, it is the natural tendency of objects to resist changes in their state of motion. This tendency to resist changes in their state of motion is described as inertia.

Inertia = the resistance an object has to a change in its state of motion.

You probably heard of this statement regarding inertia according to Newton's first law:

"An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an external and unbalanced force . An object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external and unbalanced force"

But what does it mean exactly? It's actually really simple. The above statement simply says if something is not moving, it will always be not moving unless something moves it. A pencil is at rest until you push it.

However, in order to demonstrate this a little better, say you are bowling, but you are pushing the bowling ball instead of rolling. At first, it's going to be pretty hard to push it, but if you follow with it, it will soon be easier, until it simply goes by itself. Why? Second part of Newton's first law. That ball is now a "object in motion" and will continue to move until a large force can stop it (such as the end of the bowling alley). So why can't you roll a bowling ball easily with your pinkie or stop the ball with the pins (they are forces)? Because, according to Newton's law, objects that are resting or moving tend to stay resting or moving. The force has to be strong enough to overcome that inertia in order to make it rest or make it move. Inertia is really quite simple when broken down.

Inertia is mass X velocity.
Newton's first law says that inertia is conserved after a collision.
