Do you mean downloading the program called "Limewire"? Limewire (the program) has no viruses, no matter what the dunderheads say. Just be sure to download it from the *real* Limewire site http://www.limewire.com
Better yet, try Frostwire http://www.frostwire.com
Now, if you're talking about downloading from the *network* that Limewire connects to (Gnutella) then that's where you'll run into problems. That's where the viruses are. Limit Limewire to only download MP3's and nothing else. If you are looking for software, then you have less of a chance of getting a virus using Ares P2P. http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net

You don't usually get viruses from downloading Limewire (as long as its from their site). BUT you do get a lot of threats from the stuff you download using it. These files come from individual users just like you so the program as no control over what comes in.
Apart from the danger of the software you download could be infected with a virus (which is statistically low btw), the biggest threat is from things that disguise as other things. So a good knowledge about how to tell if a file is a fake or not is what can keep you safe apart from the standard updated anti-virus programs.
So it is up to you if you want to take that risk.
(Its a bit like having sex with strangers. You could use condoms but it can still leak, and you can't trust those people)

limewire never sends you viruses or something it s a well known software company however you will get tons of spywares that u get anywhere in the web they are not harmful but i suggest not to download any softwares that offers you 100000 free songs and stuff there are tons of it in web and some of them sends you dialers and some kinda harmful viruses such as trojans and worms but if you really want to download it u will need a good anti-virus program + firewall (you gotta register to get daily updates) you can get either norton or panda titanium 2006 newest version ps: most of the viruses malwares and worms comes with those free songs not with the software progs always scan 'em before downloading and running into your system hope this will help good luck

here is your answer. don't use limewire or any of those type of programs. Instead use BitTorrents. Download azureus which is a BitTorrent Client. Then go to a BitTorrent tracker site such as thepiratebay.org, torrentspy.com, or mininova.com and download anything you want. these are much more trustworthy.

Always check everything that you download with an antivirus program before you run it. You can use AVG, it is a good free antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/
Also, BitTorrent is a somewhat more trustworthy network. But that doesn't cancel the antivirus advice!
