The stock mufflers are not easily modified - and any modification you would be able to do would create major carburetion issues - plus it wouldn't give you that growl - just obnoxious noise.

The growl you're looking for isn't cheap - it comes from a set of slip-on Termignoni http://www.termignoni.it/catalogo/dettaglio.php?lang=ENG&marca=DUCATI or Remus http://motostrano-store.com/dumohiex.html mufflers.

With a muffler change, you will need to re-jet. This can be a major hassle on a bike that had some carburetion issues to begin with - so sometimes it's actually cheaper and easier to take to to a Duc Mechanic and have them install the mufflers and do the required jetting.

Unfortunately ,there is no cheap way to get that growl.

Hey, it's a Ducati, nothing is cheap!

I would not modify the stock pipe. If you really want some noise, buy an aftermarket setup and retune the engine to match the pipe. If you cut the baffles out of the factory pipe, you'll loose horsepower and overheat the engine (eventual damage to exhaust valves).

It's not worth messing up te factory pipes. Keep them in case you sell the bike - you can sell the aftermarkets seperately.

More than likely you'll need to retune the engine to keep it from running hot. My neighbor has an ST4 with Akropovic pipes... nice sound but, he had to put a new chip in to tune the bike.
