It depends on how your business is organized. If you are a sole proprietorship, then your Social Security Number IS your tax ID number. If you are a corporation or an LLC, you need to apply for tax ID numbers with the IRS and your state tax authority.

You do not need either of those if you're virtually selling merchandise.

If you incorporate your business then you get a Tax ID or if you open a storefront or commercial bank account as a sole proprietor you'll need your SSN.

Why on earth would you consider publishing your Social Security Number in these days of Indentity Theft??? No, you definately need a Tax ID, Vendor's License or some form of EIN (Employer Identification Number) to show you are a legitimate business.

Your SSN is enough if you're a sole proprietor, unless you'll have employees or if you'll be collecting sales tax.

SSN is fine. As you sell things, you will want to track what you sell it at and also all your expenses (price you paid, seller fee's, internet service, shipping paid by you).

Unless you are incorprated, your SSN is perfectly fine to use as your TIN.
