I am 27 and want to try my hand at the violin. How difficult is it? I have 10 years of experience with piano and percussion each (even though it has been 5 or 6 since I have played those) and I can manage guitar. Am I going to drive my wife crazy with this? How long will it take to avoid "squeaking?" How long until I can play to impress non-musical folks? (I will probably practice and hour a day) Thanks!

It *is* difficult, but well worth the effort. I think the common perception is that it takes about five years to get into the violin. But you're never too old and there are a lot of advantages in trying. You might want to check out "bavs" -- Beginning Adult Violin Study on YahooGroups. Excellent forum with over 2,000 subscribers. You'll find lots of good information there, and support from others with the same concerns.

Squaking doesnt always happen and suprising enough it is much easier than it looks.
People just make jokes about it. In the schools that is one of the starting instruments for kids, so it cant be that hard.
Go for it ,you wont drive her crazy.

The more you practice the sooner you will become proficient. Yes, it will drive your wife nuts, anyone who does not play never will realize how difficult it is.

Once you've learned one instrument, it's much easier to learn others, especially if they're similar. You shouldn't have any trouble.
