Timing off and/or too low a grade of gas.

it sounds like the engine i what they call detonation.if the car is fuel injected it probably needs a fuel system cleaning to remove the carbon deposits on top of the pistons.also retarded timing can cause labor knocking also.you can give a higher octane gas a try first before yo take it in to have it checked out.go to the mid grade gas or even premium gas.

Also, check your oil.. some people don't, and that will cause that kind of noise.. and, pretty quick, your engine is going to give up on ya..
By the way, you didn't say what type of car you have, and that would clue us as to whether you need a higher octane fuel, or not..

the octane of your gas you are using is too low.try the mid grade or high test.also you could have your timing checked.

could be a number of reasons ,, you might be low on oil , your transmission could not be downshifting like it should , low octane gas ,, or just old motor
