y=3

1. Solve this system of equations and check: x - 2y = 14
x + 3y = 9

a. First, be sure that the variables are "lined up" under one another. In this problem, they are already "lined up".

x - 2y = 14
x + 3y = 9

b. Decide which variable ("x" or "y") will be easier to eliminate. In order to eliminate a variable, the numbers in front of them (the coefficients) must be the same or negatives of one another. Looks like "x" is the easier variable to eliminate in this problem.

x - 2y = 14
x + 3y = 9

c. Now, subtract to eliminate the "x" variable.
(Remember: when you subtract signed numbers, you change the signs and follow the rules for adding signed numbers.)

x - 2y = 14
-x - 3y = - 9

- 5y = 5

d. Solve this simple equation.

-5y = 5
y = -1

e. Plug "y = -1" into either of the ORIGINAL equations to get the value for "x".

x - 2y = 14
x - 2(-1) = 14
x + 2 = 14
x = 12

f. Check: substitute x = 12 and y = -1 into BOTH ORIGINAL equations. If these answers are correct, BOTH equations will be TRUE!

x - 2y = 14
12 - 2(-1) = 14
12 + 2 = 14
14 = 14 (check!)

x + 3y = 9
12 + 3(-1) = 9
12 - 3 = 9
9 = 9 (check!)

There is no stopping us now! Let's try a harder problem....

It looks the question is incomplete.
The first possibility is to write the equation in standard form
x+3y -9=0
Second to write in intercept form
y = -1/3 x -3
Third is to find the value of x and y
When x=3, y=2
x=0, y=3
x=6 y =1 and so on by giving any value to x we get different values of y

x + 3y = 9 Rewrite the equation.
3y = 9 - x Subtract x from both sides.
y = 3 - 1/3x Divide both sides by 3.
That's the answer if you are solving for y.
Here's the answer if you're solving for x, although I don't see why you would be~

x + 3y = 9 Rewrite the equation.
x = -3y + 9 Subtract 3y from both sides (can also be written as: x = 9 - 3y).

~~~
And if you are trying to graph it, here's what it means ...
(use the first solution in my answer: y = 3 - 1/3x)
However, clean it up:
y = -1/3x + 3
-1/3 is your slope,
and 3 is your y-intercept.
This means:
On your graph, put a point on 3 on the y-axis [ (0,3) ].
Count down one tick and over to the right 3 ticks.
Plot the point.
And continue from there.
Well, x = 9 - 3y and y = 9 - x/3, if that's what you mean...
y=2
3+3*2=9
3+6=9
9=9
x+3y=9 x=3
y=2.75
1.75+3*2.75=9
1.75+8.25=9
