It seems to be poorly drawn and cheesey by all standards. When their startled, what's the deal with the sweat drops hanging in mid air. Watching them is like watching a late 60's kung fu or Godzilla movie, the mouth opens and a whole paragraph comes out. Bring back Grape Ape, Magilla Gorilla, Schoolhouse Rock and all those other cartoons of the 70's. Please save the children.

Because Japanese titles (the best ones, not the simplistic children's titles) are more, for lack of a better term, cerebral than American titles. Even English translations of Japanese series, like "Cowboy Bebop" and others, are not as condescending to their audience.

Of the newer American titles, the only ones which showed such a level of intricacy are clever titles as "Powerpuff Girls" and "Billy and Mandy." Most other titles show the cheesy, childish attitudes of which you speak. "Teen Titans," and others lack originality, have simplistic story progress, and work too hard on the "lesson teaching" methods prevalent in today's entertainment.

yes, i agree to a point. But there are some that are outstanding pieces of animation. Miyazaki films are brilliant, try watching 'Hotaru no haka' known as 'graveyard of the fireflies' and not feel some kind of emotion. Try watching 'crayon-shin chan' without having a few giggles. Note that also humour, expressions, slang can not always be translated, so knowing japanese is a big help in understanding anime more.
i do agree that alot of anime is just annoying and i also would rather watch ren and stimpy, sponge bob or family guy. it is all relative to where you live and what you grow up with. i am from New Zealand but i lived in japan for 5 years with my japanese wife and her parents. Every day we had anime on tv so it kind of grows on you. Its a bit like japan pop. At first you think, my god that's crap, then one day your singing along with them, thinking, hey hang maybe this isn't so bad.

You know, having gone back and watched some of the cartoons from my childhood, the anime is better done overall. Anyway, it has more interesting stories. I guess if you don't like plot it would suck, but I like the stuff I watch to have a little more substance than just dropping anvils on people's heads.

Having lived in Japan for 20 years, even Japanese think Japanimation (or anime) is for kids. They don't get grownups who enjoy that and certainly do not comprehend anyting other than Miyazaki's films being anything other than junk once you hit your 30s.

I think the cheesy part plays into it for Westerners as well as the violence and sex. I'm with you, I'd sooner watch the Simpsons, Looney Tunes or even Super Chicken.
