A matter of preference really. Flute is generally considered to be easier to play, and easier to get a pretty sounds out of. Oboe is notoriously difficult to play in tune (which is why orchestras tune to the oboe). Either one in the hands of a truly good player sounds beautiful. However, since flute is so much more approachable, more people play it and there are really more flute players out there than there are gigs for them. If you do manage to get reasonably good at the oboe, you'll have a lot less competition for those reasonably sparse gigs. You'll actually find that many woodwind gigs go to the person who brings an alto sax, tenor sax, clarinet, and flute.

Oboe because it is more fun to play the oboe than it is to play the flute.
