I'll give it a try. This is just my opinions, so yours may vary.
1945 - Establishment of the United Nations. That year saw the end of World War II, but perhaps the most lasting result is knowledge of the need for a world body to prevent WW3.
1949 - End of Chinese Civil War and establishment of the People's Republic of China. While the Cold War was between the US and the USSR, this event lead to the eventual rise of China as something of a third power, which still is growing today. The Korean War was also a direct result of this as well.
1957 - Launching of Sputnik 1. In the long run, this may well signal the beginning of man's journey into the depths of space. Sputnik was just a beeping ball designed to put a scare into the non-Communist world, but it was nevertheless the real beginning of the Space Age.
1962 - Cuban Missle Crisis. Besides some behind-the-scenes action in 1983, this is the closest that the Cold War got having a nuclear exchange. The major factor from this is that the US no longer felt as safe in the atomic age. Fortunately for us, neither Kennedy nor Khrushchev wanted war, and was able to avert it while still saving face.
1969 - Successful mission of Apollo 11. For the first time in the history of mankind, human beings walked on the surface of a world outside of Earth. Even if one was vehemently opposed to the United States, they would have to admit that this was really a giant leap for mankind, as Neil Armstrong said upon stepping of the lunar surface.
1973 - Yom Kippur War and subsequent oil embargo. This was probably the first time that the United States and Western Europe had an inkling of how fragile their economies were when faced with a determined opponent. It started a change in thinking within these countries in terms of alternative fuel sources.
1979 - Iran hostage crisis. The significance of this event was that it was perhaps most responsible for Ronald Reagan's victory in 1980 US Presidential elections. This was a fundamental shift in US politics as moderate politics no longer looked as appealing.
1989 - Collapse of Communist governments in Eastern Europe. It seems like it was happing all at once, with Poland and Czechoslovakia having peaceful transitions, to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, to the more bloody revolution in Romania. This was the beginning of the end for the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union as well.
1992 - Maastricht Treaty, establishing the European Union. Apart from the United Nations, this is likely the biggest factor in terms of preventing a European-based war. Because of the EU, it is actually very hard to imagine France and Germany fighting each other again.
2001 - 11 September events. For the last five years, this single day has dominated world history more than any other. It shocked the US out of a perceived complacency. The way that I look at it is with the same regard that Yamamato, the planner behind Pearl Harbour, noted, that a sleeping giant has been awakened. Subsequent actions in Afghanistan and Iraq are, I fear, just the beginning.
I think that should give a rough outline of events. You might include cultural events such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Super Bowl, and the Rubik's Cube, but I stuck with geopolitical events.

Is this a homework assignment?
Try going to your local public library. Ask to see the World Almanacs. There are plenty of world events listed in every Almanac. Go for it! That way, you are doing your own work. And, using your head, too.
