During this time, if you were said to be a witch, you would have been killed. Burning was a popular way of killing so-called witches in the 16th and 17th centuries. Hundreds of thousands of people were thought to be killed because they were supposedly witches. Wikipedia is a good start to look this up, but there are many sites devoted to this, the Salem witch trials, and many more. Just type in witch trial, witch hunt, Salem witch trials, etc. and you will get hundreds of thousands of articles. Hope this helps.
Blessed Be!!!!!

Edit: Also, I got to thinking and wanted to add that if you made someone mad at you, or they just didn't like you for some reason, they would spread the rumor that you were practicing witchcraft and cause an uproar of the town and they would then hunt you down and burn, stone, or kill you somehow. Just wanted to add that it didn't matter if you were practicing or not. It helps to try and understand the mass hysteria this caused in a time when religion(the Christian God I should say) was everything or you were nothing. You had to believe a certain way or you would be killed.
