About 1% of the population depending on where you live. But don't worry if you have this type because an AB negative person can safely receive the following Red Blood Cell types if a transfusion is needed: AB Neg, A Neg, B Neg, and O Neg and if those are not available and it is an emergency you can also receive AB Pos, A Pos, B Pos, and O Pos blood during a one time incident. AB Neg is a good type to be. The blood type most in need is O Neg because it can be given to anyone safely.
If an AB Negative person donated blood their blood can only be given to AB Negative and AB Positive patients. AB Neg given to anyone other than these blood types could cause death.

AB negative is the rarest form of blood a person could have. Blood banks and hospitals usually have less then the required amount if any at all, that's why they push people to donate blood. The most common blood type is O positive. Which they call a person with this blood type a universal donor, because every body will accept it.
