Since when did the Twins start calling themselves Piranhas? and why?

The other posters are mostly correct. Ozzie Guillen used the term during the White Sox recent series with the Twins to describe the Twins 8-9 and 1-2 hitters (Jason Tyner, Jason Bartlett, Luis Castillo, and Nick Punto). All four are hitting around .300 or more (.328 now for Bartlett), and are all extremely fast. They play small ball - stealing bases, sacrificing, etc. to score runs - which makes them seem like a bunch of piranhas nipping at their opponents' heals, as opposed to the White Sox style of of baseball, which is a bunch of slow power hitters (sharks). The Twins picked up on Ozzie's comments and adopted the term as their own.

The other posters are right, Ozzie gave them that name because the bottom of the batting order (Punto and Bartlett). He nicknamed them Piranha's because they keep going for more and keep coming back. I got an official Minnesota Twins piranha's tshirt at the game Thursday. Go Twins!

They dont call themselves Piranhas, Ozzie Guillen did. Its because the Twins keep scrapping and scrapping and just picking up hits and runs and then before you know it, you lose and your behind them in the Wild Card race.
