My sister-in-law was born in California. Her mom, here temporarily on a work permit, returned home with her when she was still a baby. She's 17 now, has graduated and wants to leave her country of El Salvador to come to the states. How can she get her U.S.birth certificate? Her mom doesn't remember the name of the hospital. She thinks it might be UCLA Women's Hospital, or something like that. Is there a way to search for a birth certificate with only the birthdate and city (L.A.) known?

You need to know the county that she was born in, which if you know the city you can locate the county. The contact court house and they will direct you to the department that handles birth certificates. Make sure that you get a STATE birth certificate since allot of government agencies don't accept a COUNTY birth certificate. Is there a difference? Well, my daughter was born in California, we live in another state and when I took her in to get her driver's license the gal behind the counter didn't want the birth certificate I had because it was a county issued one. Our current state requires a state issued birth certificate. Since your sister would be entering the U.S. she might want to make sure she gets a state issued one since there might be a problem with having only the county issued one.

Good luck and Goddess Bless!

Usually City Hall has on file all of the birth certificates. Or you can go on-line for most states and apply to get a copy. I'm not sure what the site for California is, but if you type "California State Government" or something to that effect you should at least be able to find a web-site that can tell you where you need to go.
