A vast majority of meets are scored by place. The top five runners from each team add up thier places and that is the team score. Usually, people who run without a team (like if a school only ran 3 girls) are dropped from the scoring. Additionally, each team can only have 7 runners, the last two don't score, but can push up other teams' scores. If the meet allows a school to run more then 7, any additional runners should be dropped too. When you see results, the will often list off name, school, time, place and team place. The team place is the one that matters for team scoring. Low score wins. A perfect score is 15, when a school finishes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Some meets are scored by adding up the times of the top 5 runners, low time wins. Those are pretty rare. Another scoring option is a flighted race (or a 7-man). There, it is more like there are seven races, with each school having one runner in each race. The school is supposed to seed their 7 runners, so there is a top flight (with each school's best runner), a 2 flight (with each school's 2nd best), etc. Then, each place is again added up. In that setup, a perfect score is 7, when a school wins each flight.

if any of it is confusing, i am sure the coach could explain it to you with a result's sheet in hand. Seeing the results sheet makes it a lot easier to explain.

Cross Country Scoring

Lowest score wins. Each team enters 7 runners. The placing order of the first 5 runners to cross the finish are added to get the team score. Example, two teams (Red and Blue) finish like this: 1. Red 2. Blue 3. Blue 4. Red 5. Blue 6. Red 7. Blue 8. Blue (fifth Blue runner) 9. Red 10. Red (fifth Red runner) 11. Red 12. Blue 13. Blue 14. Red Red: 1+4+6+9+10 = 30 points Blue: 2+3+5+7+8 = 25 points (Blue wins) In the event of a tie, the decision goes to the 6th runner for each team to see who wins between those two.

well the coaches each choose the seven best runners to run in the meet. the first five to finish count in the scoring. first place is 1 point, 2nd is 2, 3rd is three and so on. it's like golf, you want the lowest score. the lowest score possible is a 15. thats called a sweep. it's a prety decent system.

the first five runners for each team get points based on where they finish. The runner who finishes first, gets 1 point, second gets 2 points, etc. The team with the lowest number of total points wins.
