i go to school at a campus next to the beach and often times my roommates and i get tar from the ocean stuck to the bottom of our feet. when we shower, the tar rubs off onto the bathtub and stays there. what is a safe and effective way to lessen the visibility of these stains?

baby oil is the best thing to remove tar.

my husband was roofer for years and baby oil was the only thing to remove the tar.

good luck.

Acetone comes in fingernail polish remover so that could be a good one to try. Just be sure to turn on the fan and ventilate well if you use toxic products and for Heaven's sake, don't use fire! Try the baby oil answer.

To protect your feet, buy some swim shoes. They are made out of the same stuff as wet suits, but have mesh tops and sturdy bottoms. They look kind of like a sporty slipper. They are great for protecting your feet from sharp things and tar at the beach. You should also consider contacting the Environmental Protection Agency about the tar because it sounds like residue left over from a serious oil spill. The oil seeps into the sand and pebbles and lies just below the surface. When you walk on it, the top layer is disturbed and the oil and tar gets on your feet. Hopefully you're not walking all over your house with that stuff on your feet! The owner of the vessel needs to be held accountable and if it's an old oil spill, EPA may not be monitoring the spill anymore, but it sounds like they should be, and the responsible ship owner should be made to clean it up!

The fire marshall would be pooping a brick right now if he read all these answers. The only safe one I read was the baby oil one, with which I happen to agree. Then take Dawn dish washing liquid to get the baby oil out of the tub so you don't slip and injure yourself. rinse the tub really well and consider swimming some place with less pollution.

Did I mention that if you put a rag with mineral spirits, acetone or gasoline in the trash, most of the time it will self-combust and you will burn your dorm down?

How To Remove Beach Tar

Cheap. safe enough, and not strictly offensive, or harmful to use, MINERAL SPIRITS, on a rag.

Don't pour it in the tub strictly, and remove as much of both elements as possible before flusing water down the drain,,, but I promise it's as I said, quick, cheap, and not so deathly harmful to the environment.

Mineral spirits ior WD-40 would be my first resort, also. If that's not effective, then get a product like Goof-off, which has a stronger solvent.

acetone works best. We use it in the flooring industry to remove latex, epoxys, and yes tar

Try WD-40 it's primarily used for squeeky doors, but I use it for everything. It really works.
