Is it legal in TX for a woman to hit a child with a wooden spoon to discipline them? I saw this the other day and I think it was horrible. I've never seen ANYTHING like this in Ireland (moved here a year ago)

It left red marks all over his backside. The kid didn't do much - he just picked his nose like every other toddler in the world!

I don't think it is illegal. I know when I was younger I was spanked with a wooden spoon and a paint stirer, more than once. It beats hurting your hand, lol. I would say if it would be legal or not, did she spank the child hard with anger or was it a normal about of force?

I think we should not go too far into the legality of parental disciplining their children..... as these days almost any form of corporal 'punishment' is illegal almost anywhere on this planet!
Waht we should look at is whether any 'punishment' meted out to a kid is appropriate and commensurate with the 'bad' thing the kid did.
I believe hitting a kid with a wooden spoon, or even with a silken spoon, is wrong and uncalled for...... for picking a kid's nose!
All that parent needs is to remember the days when he or she was a kid.......or look around to see other kids doing what is naturally and instintively a very normal human act to enable one to breathe with ease, and relief!
Kid +++. Parent ---. Legality: illegal. Score: Parent wrong

You never seen anything like it in Ireland?
I have from my mother lol
This is the age old argument don't hit your kids, well as they argument goes did me no harm and I love my mother to bits, and just knew not to cross her or else it was the wooden spoon for me! Mind you it never happened in public lol
Legally in Ireland and UK it is permissible for a parent to use minor force to discipline a child.

Well you're allowed to spank your child, but not to the point where there are marks or injuries, a lot of the child abuse laws in this country are based on severity of the punishment or physical injury. That's pretty uniform no matter what state you live in.
I guess my answer is how hard was she spanking, did it leave a mark, was the kid crying hard afterwards and in pain? If that's true you can report it, no problem.

It sounds as though she went a bit overboard, but I do think that you are overreacting as well. Five minutes? Were you timing it on your watch? That's a really long time for a spanking...try it sometime. Try whipping your pillow with a spoon and see if you can keep it up for that long.

I think parents should be able to discipline their kids. I dont mean put their life in danger or anything, but I garauntee you that if parents were allowed to spank their kids more, there would be alot less incidents of children being violent.

Sure wish my dad had used a wooden spoon...well maybe not...but I can tell you that the belts that they wore back in the 1970's were wide and usually had holes in them. Sure played havoc with my backside.

some kids dont respond to doing what they are supposed to by love and being a good parent, they need a little fear to inspire good behavior. I know when I was little I needed to get beat, then when I got older and my dad accidentally hit me in the face and I called the police, so from then on he wasnt allowed to touch me, from there I thought I could get away with anything and eventually got kicked out....if my dad would have just kept kicking my @$$, I would have learned to respect him through fear

Actually in Texas is legal to discipline a child by sitting him in a tub full of water and throw in a toaster (excellent homemade electric chair). You can also shoot him if you have no imagination.
