When water molecules get close to each other, they start to "stick" together due to the partial negative charge of the oxygen atom and the partial positive charge of the hydrogen atoms. This property of self-attraction of water is called cohesion. This attraction can turn into what is known as the self-ionization of water: 2 H2O → H3O+ + OH-
