No they are not for children exclusively. Some are intended for child only but must are not. I'm not just talking about late night cartoons. Cartoons like Bugs bunny and a lot of the older cartoon are filled with social stereotyping and commentary that must children would pick up and/or understand. The important thing to remember is children don't make cartoons adults do.

Some cartoons are for children. I would, however, never let my younger children watch spongebob or cartoons like that. And wouldn't let a kid under 13 watch Family guy or cartoons along those lines. But I love them, lol.

it depends. Thanks to Disney-right or wrong- the general assumption in the US is that cartoon equals children. however that is not always the case, and even especially since I'd say 1995. it has become less and less so.
A vast number of Anime, is not made for, nor should it ever be viewed by kids, Fururama, Family Guy, South Park, Drawn Together, are all aimed at adults. Simpsons and King of the Hill are more in the vein of live action sit coms to some extent and the content can vary by episode.

Depends what cartoon..Cartoons are getting very violent now days, you really need to look at the show before you let the kid watch it..If you don't want your kids to watch violent shows that is...But then again, there are many cartoons that are suitable for children, bob the builder, blues clues, dora the explorer, for the younger kids..

Depends on the cartoon. In general now they are made for both, as the kids aren't meant to get some of the refrences but the adults will get a chuckle. Also some like the Simpsons are more for adults as they kept it alot to those who grew up on it.

it depends on the intent or theme. i've seen cartoons that many adults couldn't handle watching yet something like the smurfs seem allright for kids.
