There is a large number of safeguards to filter out infected blood in the United States. Ever increasing screening has been ongoing since 1983. The FDA regulates this for all blood banking organizations. It is very hard for contaminated blood/infected blood to enter the pool. I worked for a blood collection center for many years and zero infected blood entered the pool, and several were found and destroyed. It is very safe today.
