Even if it's only for you own PC you are reusesing images which may hvve copyright preventing them from being used but lets be honest, no one is going to know - it's the truth.
If you ar concerned or just want to have images from nice folk who wnat you to use their images or music or whatever take a lookat Creative Commons. They allow free use in most circumstances. They keep things real simple.

I would not think you could get into any trouble copying any image from the net provided you are only using them for your personal use and not making money out of them. They are after all in the public domain. If you really want to know I could ask my daughter she did Internet copyright for her dissertation.

A great place to get images for your desktop is www.webshots.com. You can download their free software and being loading images onto your PC for personal use without legal issues.

As long as you are only using the image personally, you probably will not get in any trouble. It is still wrong to use others work without permission.
