On a recent trip to a museum I noticed when (English) Kings and Queens throughout history sign their names they put an 'R' at the end of it. Even present day Queen Elizabeth does it.

I'm surprised Princess Nicola 23 didn't know; it is, as so many others have said before me, R for Rex if it was a king, and for Regina if it was a queen. As for what Patrick said, the Queen Mother was Scottish, so the Queen can't be completely German.
Based on Blackadder the third though, that one's being doing the rounds for a good few many years.
Ah well, it's a bit better than David Icke's insistence that she's really a twelve foot lizard.

It stand for Rex for a king and Regina for a queen. Because it is latin, monarchs often translated thier names to the latin equivalent when signing official documents, eg Henricus Rex, Anna Regina: Henry the King, Anne the Queen. The same initials appear after the names of Spanish kings and queens, standing for Rey and Reina, respectively.

O.k., so you've got the Rex/Regina bit, but did you know that Victoria was 'Victoria R.I.' This refers to a time when India was a British colony, and stands for Regina Imperatrix (Empress). The Georges and Edward were R.I., too (Rex Imperator - Emporer). Cheers!
