as a driver yes, as a person no. He could never take losing and would resort to anything to avoid it (e.g. knocking hill of to win first championship, taking villeneuve out) Todays fiasco with ferrari reporting alonso for supposedly holding massa up sums him and his team up completely, they will do anything within (or not) the rules to win. It is this part of his character which will stop him ever being regarded up there with Senna, moss etc.

I dont neccesarily agree, he is a brilliant driver but his sportsmanship leaves a lot to be desired, and you have to take into account that ppl like Stirling Moss,Jackie Stewart etc, were just as 'gung ho' behind the wheel but didn't have the technology and all the safety measures in place so they were probably more 'daring' ,bearing in mind the number of deaths per season way back then were at least triple the number of todays fatalities, every year in the 60's and 70's drivers were pushing it too far and going out in a ball of flames, now the F1 drivers are scared to lose an eyelash and F1 is basically a parade of expensive cars, no real racing at all, it's a strategy game now and I lost all interest in F1 when Shumacher started driving for Ferrari.
He is a good driver and in the top 10 but definately not the best in my opinion.

He is the most assisted driver ever, in these days of "strategy" races which amount to pit stop passes he just happened to have the best tacticians behind him, chances are a monkey with basic driving ability driving an F1 car with its traction control, telemetery the back up of the mighty Ferrari and the brains of Ross Braun could be as good as Shumacher, only thing is the monkey would have to have a personality by-pass to be like Shumacher

He particularly is a no longer trouble-free guy, I keep in mind seeing him watch the adventure Germany vs Portugal and regardless of Germany's lead 3-a million he became into very stern in his demeanor, he in basic terms sported a susceptible smile. i've got watched him for the completed sixteen years he has been in F1, I would desire to bypass by yet another undesirable withdrawal this 300 and sixty 5 days, first the worldwide Cup and now F1. i'm hoping to make certain Schumi racing lower back," Le 24 heures du Mans" may be the perfect one. I actual have the autographs of Jacques Villeneuve, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansel.

DEFINITELY, without a shadow of doubt, Schuey is the greatest, and will continue to be for many decades to come.
It's a great loss to Formula 1, and to the millions of fans worldwide, that this truly magnificent sportsman, is retiring from the sport he so evidently cherished.
Michael has done more for Formula 1, both on and off the track then any other previous driver. He is, and I hope continues to be, a true statesmen and pioneer for the sport. Through-out his illustrious 15 year career as a top flight driver, Michael has broken all records and constantly strives by pushing himself to the limits, with the will and determination he's shown from the start. The facts speak for themselves.
I feel a hugh sense of loss, as it's almost the end of an era for Michael. There will never be another Schumacher in my lifetime. I sincerely hope he wins the World Championship this season, for a record eighth time. A fitting tribute to a truly remarkable person.

Some of you have said that Michael is a great driver, but not a great person. I strongly disagree.
To quote what someone said on an F1 forum:
"Let's remember what this driver has done for circuit safety, the $13 million USD he's given to charity ($10 million USD for the Tsunami appeal) and the excitement and thrill the 7 times world champ has brought to millions of F1 fans the world over. He's a legend, and perhaps, just perhaps, the finest driver ever?"
He's a fine driver, and competing at the top of motorsport for fifteen years, he's always going to have a few clashes with other drivers.

Well, people talks about Schmacher's sportsmanship, but Manssel and Senna were just as bad (if not worse). Of course, I wouldn't say that he has good sportsmanship either (his brother is way better than he is), since he had not once, screwed his teammates over (well, Ferrari has a lot to do with it as well, they really spoiled him).
Anyhow, he is indeed a great driver. When he was with Benneton Renault, he already proved himself as the best (he was the hothead back then where Hill was a stradegist, and Villeneuve was a great all-around driver). Then once he was transferred to Ferrari, the mechanic problems made him the world number 2 for awhile. Then finally, once Ferrari broke though, he became the number one. At the same time, the Ferrari team has a lot to do with him being the world most dominent driver.
Finally, to answer your question: yes!! by record, he is the greatest F1 driver ever.

His records say yes and the fact that he could command a team like Ferrari and steer them back to glory instead of going to a winning team in the mid 90's speaks volumes. I'll certainly miss seeing him race... Even with the controversy that surrounded him constantly F1 won't be the same without him. Love him or hate him his impact was undeniable.

If you go on statistics, then yes but lets face it, F1 has become more about car and pit team then driver. Schumacher has done so well at ferrari because of Ross Braun.
