I would suggest getting all the speed power and upgradability(PC card slots) you can afford so you don't find your self wanting another one in a year or two. Laptops are now available with dual core and 64 bit processors in reference to Windows Vista(64 bit OS). Be sure to do a lot of research before you invest your hard earned money. A lot of people think they know something and really don't, some will lie to you to sell a computer so I can't stress enough doing your own research online, in stores, and even read some books or PC magazines for the latest technologies before making a purchase. I wouldn't even look at a used one unless I knew the previous owner.

I highly do not recommend getting a laptop now. Microsoft is comming out with a new Operating System called Vista and it will replace XP and become the new standard. Instead of buying a laptop now wait until Jan 30th of 2007 so it will come with it

I got a cheap one from Dell last year ($449). It works great for school and fun. Except that there aren't many games I can run. So if gaming isn't important to you, get a cheap laptop now, and if you can afford it in the future, sell yours on ebay to go towards a new one.

getting a used laptop is asking for trouble. a refurbished one is best if you want to save a few bucks, but new ones are best. you want to save money, just avoid the bells and whisles. e-machines aren't too bad if i want new and cheap.
