About six months after the estate was closed, I received a bill for medical services, which I received over a year and a half after she passed away. Am I liable for this bill? So far I have refused to pay it.

No unless it's under your name as well. you are liable to pay it. You should go to the medical service and explain to them that your spouse passed away.

I am sorry about your loss, I hope things are getting a little easier for you.

While you were in probate you had a probate attorney. You should take this bill to them for advice.

The short answer is no, you are not required to pay for this debt. When your spouse's estate was in probate your probate attorney was required to publish in a local paper that a probate had been opened. All parties that had debts against this person should have bought any and all debts for payment at that time.

Under most state laws we are not required to pay debts incurred by the ones that have passed on. We have no debtor's prisons as before where we are responsible for relatives debts after they have passed.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Mark "Deceased, Return to Sender" and draw an arrow to the return address on the envelope. Also, get a marker and cross out the postal barcode at the bottom of the envelope or under the address, wherever it may be, and drop it back in the mailbox. If you don't mark out the barcode, it can come right back to you.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your wife. May God bless and comfort you.

No, you're not. They should have rendered the bill in a timely manner. Their loss. If you receive any more statements, just mark them "Deceased" and drop them back in the mail.

Sorry for your loss.
