Water flushing different directions has nothing to do with the hemispheres or where you are in the water. It has to do with the construction of a toilet. Toilets are made differently in Australia. Try this. Your toilt should have a large rush of water come out of the inside front of the bowl when you flush it. Try using something to deflect the water in either of two directions, rather than letting it flow straight down. Your toilet will flush couterclockwise if you deflect it to the left, and clockwise if you flush it to the right. The reason it flushes the way it does on it's own is because the water comes out slightly to the left. When the force of the rushing water hits the water in the bowl, it causes it to spin.
Now, if you were to drain a bathtub or sink, it might seem like the science I've just told you about isn't true. But what effects the rotation of a draining bathtub or sing is the direction it was slightly moving when the downward force occurred from the drain. Fluidity causes the water to try and fill in the space that is created, and any slight rotation or movement will cause this vortex to choose it's direction.
If you believe in the coriolis effect, just look at hurricanes and typhoons. The vortex created in these storms forms by the exact same principal described above, yet hurricanes spin one way, and typhoons spin the other. Even located in the same northern hemisphere. There have even been hurricanes in the Pacific. This is due to the stream of air flowing over the world. It winds into the North and the South of the Northern hemisphere. It was originally stated that Typhoons originate in the Southern hemisphere, and hurricanes in the north. But recently we've seen Typhoons forming just North of the equator.
The rotation of the earth does cause the direction of the vortex of these storms, but only because the air is moving faster than elsewhere in lattitude. A jet stream can cause the same effect.

clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere, and in a counterclockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere. The supposed reason for this is supposed to be the Coriolis effect, which has to do with the effect of the earth's rotation on moving objects such as clouds. however its effect on drains is denied by most scientists although the simpsons show it as happening.
The main reason the water flows out the way it does is because of the way if flows in.

My toilet spins counter-clockwise in the USA. For those who are mystified by the fact that people in the Northern hemisphere are giving different answers, despite the Coriolis Effect, see this site: http://www.discovery.com/area/skinnyon/skinnyon970523/skinny1.html
It explains the idea of the Coriolis Effect, but also talks about why toilets are exempt.
