would metal sound better without the fast double bass brums?

Just different kinds of metal. When all heavy metal was slower and more plodding, double bass drums would have sounded silly. When gfroups like Metallica sped it up, it sounded great.

I can hear Lars doing the machine guns in "One" right now. The double bass was an important part of Metallica's sound for many years. (was Lars still using it on St. Anger?)

But for Sabbath, any grunge band, etc., a double bass would not work. I like it all.

I'm not sure if Pantera used double bass drums, but they were considered speed metal, I think, and also groove metal, making them they're own genre, speed groove or something. I don't know much about the double bass drums, but I know Pantera's drummer, Vinnie Paul, used the thick ends of the drum sticks instead of how drummers normally use sticks. I have no idea if that's normal or not with metal.

some very good bands make use of the double bass, but that's a good point you make. lots of new acts rely way too much on the power of the double bass to make up for their lack of original songwriting skill. if you mean metal in general, i think some bands need to be able to resist the pull of the double bass trend, but the good bands that inspired the trend don't need to quit just because some dumbasses copied them and made it cliche'.
