Schools are for learning. Anything that detracts from that purpose is an unnecessary distraction. "Express yourself" through clothing after school. Then nobody will care about you running around with a bone through your nose or your eyes painted like an Egyptian's (except any parent dumb enough to let you dress that way).
Uniforms save a lot of pointless aggravation and help put focus where it belongs, on learning.

In high school cliques, what is the defining factor?
Appearance.
This is why, while I am an advocate of individuality and all expressions of it (including clothing), I think that a set criteria of clothing as a uniform will allow students who wouldn't normally sit together in the lunchroom or library to break down the barriers between cliques.
We as humans base too much on appearance. If there was any reason that I (as an outcast/freak sort) didn't approach another girl as a friend, it was because she was so different from me that I wasn't sure we could connect. With the uniforms, I think that students will make friends who are more based upon their personality rather than what clothes they wear.
Not to say that individuality cannot be expressed through wearing uniforms, but it can be channeled in different ways through variances on the criteria.

i had uniforms in my school for 2 years but it was ridiculous because they had this policy that you could "opt out" which basically meant you had to wear a collared shirt but it was completely different from the dress code. It was pointless but i didnt mind it because it meant i didnt have to worry about what i was going to wear the next day. When i got to the high school, they didnt even try it. so then all the other schools followed suit and we dont have it anymore. we dont have any problems anyway with the dress code.
i think though that if you go to a private school and you're paying to go there then you must follow those rules they set out! Because they have the right to "kick you out" of the school if you don't.
So basically my view is that public schools should not be able to MAKE you wear a uniform. They can suggest it but more then likely not everyone is going to agree. Private schools should be allowed.

Uniforms rule! Unfortunately when we are in school wearing them, we do not realize how lucky we are. The benefits are many. For one thing, if you go to school with snobby girls or very wealthy girls, you do not have to worry about daily clothes competition. You all dress the same; you are all equal. Also, you don't have to agonize over what you are going to wear every morning, nor do you have to worry about what everyone else is wearing. This gives you more time in your life, and also helps you to concentrate better on your studies.
Lastly, with the money you save on everyday, casual clothes, you can spend more money on your bomb outfits! Like prom dresses, good suits, and dresses, holiday clothes, dressy jeans and tops, great perfume and makeup. Be thankful, and very happy! It is such a benefit. Happy schooling!

ive had both. uniforms for when i went to elementary and no uniforms in highschool. it really depends on how srict the uniform is. my cousins highschool uniform used to be any color/striped polo with kakhis and closed back shoes. i dont think that would be all that bad. but now its 3 colored polos with the school name/ symbol in the corner with kakhis and closed back shoes. i think that would be horrible if i had to wear it =P i love not having uniforms anymore. i can wear whatever i want (within reason) whenever i want =) more choices!!!!

I hate uniformas because you can't find one that looks good on everyone!! If you have a great body that's fine because no matter what you wear you'll look gorgeous but most women are average looking and many are a bit overweight so you should be able to wear clothes that suit your body type!!

I don't really like uniforms, because everyone wears the same thing and you don't get to wear your clothes that r in fashion. hope that helps.

ive been wearing uniforms all my school days and it does make it easier to get dressed in the morning. maybe im just used to them but they really dont bother me. we dont have to wear those icky plaid skirts and sweater vests though. Just a polo and nice pants, shorts, or capris. and they let you wear whatever shoes you want so you can express your self with those. i have plaid converse shoes.

uniforms are good. you dont need to worry about clothes. also no discrimination between the rich and the poor.(well unless you go to private school where everyone is rich).
