Maybe you just aren't reading poetry that speaks to you. There are hundreds - maybe thousands - of different styles out there to choose from. And they don't all require analyzing and research. Maybe something to provoke your humor of poetry would be "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein or any of his other books.

Then again, some people just don't like poetry. They're hopeless. :) But that's alright. I just don't like Harry Potter.

Some people simply dislike poetry. There's nothing wrong with that - doesn't make you dumb or anything. There is a great deal of symbolism in poetry, and some of it is just hard to understand. I'm not overly fond of it myself, although there is some that I love. Like this one.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
and sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
and looked down one as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
and having perhaps the better claim
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that, the passing there
had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
in leaves no feet had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference

Basically it means to me that just because everyone else walks a certain path, doesn't always make it the best path for me. Your question is just the same. Poetry isn't for eveyone.

Take it from an English teacher- poetry is hard and often unenjoyable.

No one can blame you if you don't enjoy poetry in general. But, that's also like saying "I hate books." There's so many out there that you can't REALLY say that and mean it- there has to be something you'd enjoy.

I personally get extremely frustrated when confronted with a poem for the first, second, third time. It's hard not to think that you're somehow missing the "deep hidden meaning" or, the "DHM" as my students like to say. But that shouldn't deter you.

Some poetry moves me so much I can't imagine not being able to refer to it and think on it.

So, I guess, in a few short words, no, you're not crazy, you're totally normal. But give it a shot. There's no "right" answer. What's important are the images, feelings, thoughts, and concepts that come into your head. The same words can mean one thing to someone else and something totally different to the next person.

Good luck!

I am utterly bored with poetry. It can be a problem if you're going to school for writing, since many writers consider poetry to be the elite class of writing. You might be shunned a little by other writing students if you admit your hatred of poetry.

I find it a waste of time and useless. It also strikes me as an egotistical game of who can be the most obtuse. I prefer novels and short stories.

That's quite normal! Poetry can be quite a bugger. :) You might try some humorous poems, something from Billy Collins or maybe Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. Good luck!

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

There's all different kinds of poetry. For example, rap music is just basically poetry with music.

Have you read Robert Frost? His poetry is easy to understand with recognizable imagery.

Try different authors. Again, you're entitled to not like it--as you can see from others' answers here, you're not alone!

Do you like song lyrics? Those are a kind of poetry, too. Maybe you just don't like the sort of poetry they make you read in school.

If you really dislike poetry, that isn't abnormal, though.

Yes it is natural for some one like yourself to hate poetry. Try reading the DaVinci Code, and other books like those.

No. Emo is a stupid label people placed on others that many of the time self-harm, gown in black etc. you're basically 'punk' in case you want a label of any form. do not take what people say to you to coronary heart they do no longer know what their speaking about and may gown/act besides the undeniable fact that you want.
