I believe that a pure substance would be one of the elements found on the periodic chart. Anything else is a combination of those elements and a compound.

Any substance is pure if it contains nothing but that substance. It can be an element, compound, mixture, alloy, or Pepsi. You know what an element is. If you mix elements together (such as hydrogen and oxygen) with no chemical reaction, you have a mixture. Ignite that mixture to start a chemical reaction, and the atoms of hydrogen and oxygen bond together to form molecules of water. That's a compound. An alloy (at least, all the ones I can think of) is a mixture of metals, though only one element really needs to be a metal.

Pure substances are any material, solid, liquid, or gas that are composed of only one element, like Hydrogen gas = H2, Helium gas = He, oxygen = O2
Compounds are materials, solid, liquid, or gas, that are composed of more then one element, like water = H2O,
and this was usually given in those type of quizes:
a mixture is something composed of more then one pure substance or compound but are not bonded. For example dirty water, H2O with dirt in it, minerals from the earth, pollution. Our atmosphere is a mixture of many gases, like N2 = nitrogen, O2 = oxygen, CO2 = carbon dioxide, and many many other pollutants.

Copper is pure substance while brass is compound that's why brass is not in the period table.Normal steel (iron) is also pure substance but stainless steel is not.
Search for periodic table on the internet.

Pure substances are simply not alloyed with any other material. Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, but it is not mixed, or alloyed with anything else.

pure substances also called elements. You can find them in the periodical tables.
Anything that made by two or more elements are compounds. You will not find them in the periodical tables.
