Once I was on a very limited budget and needed a headboard for a second bedroom. I wanted an iron bed, I went out shopping and found that they were more expensive than I wanted to pay. I ended up drawing the bed on my wall and faux painting it. I had neighbors that could see it from the street that wanted to see it in person, thinking it was an old antique. They were amazed that it was paint.
A very simple headboard can be made from picket fence or old gate mounted between two posts. The posts can be finished with a finial to give a finished look.
A really cute head board can be made by taking two or three pillows, Add tabs to the top of the pillow and then mount a curtain rod above your bed and thread the pillows onto the rod. Sometimes it is good to use three smaller pillows rather than two standard.
If you go to the site below you will see some more creative ideas.

Get a piece of HDF (High density fiberboard) and draw the shape on it that you want your headboard to look like. Cut it out and apply a spray adhesive. Apply a fiberfill batting over the headboard and around the edges. Choose a material that coordinates with your bedroom. Then stretch material over the headboard, stapling opposite sides first and finishing up by trimming down the excess material on the back. Then just screw the headboard into the wall and you have a great headboard for a very reasonable price.

Take a sheet of particle board or plywood with that you can cut out almost any shape that you would like to with a jig saw or a dremmell tool after you have done that if you want to make it look nice go to a fabric store purchase some batting and what ever kind of fabric you like you will need the dimensions of the headboard. you will need help for the next step also some spray adhesive would help. Follow the mfg instructions for the adhesive spray the side of the wood that you want to face front apply the batting and trim to fit once that is held in place have the fabric spread out on the floor right side down place the headboard on the wrong side of the fabric batting side down you will have extra since you can't see the back of the headboard I suggest spraying the adhesive on one side at a time and stapling the side to ensure that the fabric doesn't move. hope this helps

Hi ..One of the things I've been seeing now are old four panal interior doors being made into head boards. I've seen them at rummage sales flea markets and in antique shops. You might want to check your phone book to see if there are any companies that demolish old houses because they resell most of the usable items from the house. If your into the antique look that might be a cheap way to go.Refinish it paint it stencel it or leave it as it is. Good Luck !

You can make it with sheet of plywood cut to fit the size of your bed...average cost of plywood $30.00.You can then trim it out with fancy borders, paint it or stain it with the colors you want.My favorite is take the plywood to an upolstery shop and have it padded and covered with your favorite material. If your going to keep it real wood texture then buy a nice piece of plywood ( Birch or Ash ) the grains look very good when stained and varnished.Put 2 legs on it,hang it on the wall or attach to bed rail when finished.

A couple of ideas...stencil or freehand paint a picket fence. You can decorate it with stenciled trailing vines and flowers to give it a softer look. Or go to your local lumber yard and buy just enough wide plank boards (measure the width of your bed) to make a real fence. Paint it whatever color that goes with your room. You can fix it to your bed or nail it to the wall behind your bed. My sister did this and turned out beautiful.
