I'm a native Californian. Born and raised in the Bay Area. My family and I currently live in San Ramon, CA - about 35 miles east of San Francisco.
San Ramon is truly a beautiful city. It has beautiful parks and walking trails. Although no city is perfect, the crime rate here, particularly violent crime, is very, very low. Also, schools within the San Ramon Valley school district have been awarded a yearly California Distinguished School award 46 times - including all six middle schools and one high school. The state of California requires its' schools, statewide, to achieve a yearly API index of 800 or more. Every single school in the San Ramon Valley school district has a current API index of over 800. The latest API index score at my daughter's high school was 914.
Granted, the cost of living in California is very high, compared to the rest of the country, but I still love it here. Although the current population in San Ramon has doubled (to 50,000) since 1989, traffic is still pretty reasonable. On the down side, I find many residents in San Ramon are more 'polite' than actually 'friendly'. I'm not quite sure why that is, short of the city being considered upper middle class, and some people let money go to their heads.
San Ramon gets my vote as best Californian city.

The best big city would be San Francisco. For a smaller city or town, there's Carmel, Monterey or Santa Cruz down the coast.
Southern California is just too crowded, smoggy, unsophisticated and red-neck minded for my taste.

I agree w/ the other perple who said San Francisco, not only is it one of the most beautiful cities in america, it has a wonderful temp., and great seafood! Prices of homes in the area can be pretty expensive, but if plan on staying there-its worth spending the money.
Good Luck!

try san diego. gotta know some spanish though. strong spanish culture there. you got mountains and the beach, it's beautiful there. if you want the glitz and glamour, try L.A. or hollywood if you can afford it. san francisco is alright, 70 degrees all year long. can't swim in the beach though, too cold.

convinced I do. i love no longer coping with shoveling snow in the course of the iciness and in no way coping with the in no way ending storms that it is also attainable to make certain in chicago or nyc. besides the undeniable fact that, I do bypass over the vibrancy of manhattan city as SF and l. a. do exactly no longer have that.
