A diode is a one way switch that allows different switch patterns to be used in expensive systems. You can get what you need from the electronics repair stores where the TV guys go for their parts.
It goes into the door bell assembly, and pay attention to the direction as it only works correctly one way. You can't do much harm hooking it up wrong, but it won't work right if you do.

You may find a printed circuit board with it attached, or it could be independent. It will have a band around the plus end. rating will be in amps, possibly as much as 10 to 20. Match the size of the unit for best results, and it may be silicone, careful. they get hot. Sorry I can't be of more help, but we're likely to be thousands of miles away.

A diode is a semi-conductor which allows electric current to only flow in one direction, which is part of the process of converting AC (from the wall outlet) to DC (which is what all electronic ciruitry require). You can get a "standard" diode at Radio Shack, and without seeing the switch I don't know where the diode would be.

As other responders have indicated, a diode is a device to convert alternating current into direct current. I have never encountered a door chime that used one. Replacing the entire chime assembly, should it be necessary, won't cost more than ten or twenty dollars.

In electronics, a diode is a component that restricts the direction of movement of charge carriers. Essentially, it allows an electric current to flow in one direction, but blocks it in the opposite direction. Thus, the diode can be thought of as an electronic version of a check valve. Circuits that require current flow in only one direction will typically include one or more diodes in the circuit design.

Hi Maldives
If it is a diode which I doubt, purchace a new chime, remove the old one, replace it with the new one, they are cheap. Most likely the transformer is bad or a lose conection at the button. Perhaps you should check these out first.

Do have a great night.
