One of the problems, I think, is that people actually begin comparing their relationships to others in a more conscious way.

True, all people are aware of how their and other's love lives compare, but once in marriage then two people become more likely to think of maintaining their relationship for it's own sake.

Plus, people start worrying about social judgements, and can start to conflate the idea of marriage with the concept of the ideal middle-class domestic unit; at the very least placing pressure on the couple, at the worst leading them to make decisions for entirely the wrong reasons.

In short, people start thinking of their relationship as a marriage, rather than somehting which should be for the happiness, comfort and well being of both partners.

Most of the disadvantages are for the female who will carry most of the burden at home and at work. Her freedom will be lost, she can't see or talk on phone with her friends as much as she would like to, kids will come and that's for the rest of her life...He gets a nest, meals cooked, sex on demand, the excuse he's worked all day and is too tired to do his share around the house and will still like to go out with the boys. And more...

I think most people stop treating the other person as well as they used to BEFORE marriage. Not because they've stopped loving them, but because you become busy with work, mortgage, bills, etc. And you just always assume that person will be there, because they are family. You really have to work at a marriage much harder. The rewards are out of this world though and so worth it!!!

Personally, I think a disadvantage is your mate sometimes relies on you for their happiness, and if you have had a bad or are grumpy you can't provide them with what they need.
