I take it that you mean should you buy an iPod or a generic MP3 player.
Generic MP3 players tend to be cheap and do a fairly good job. The drawback with them is that the software supplied with them is usually poor, bug ridden, and difficult to use. However, if you're on a budget and just want to listen to music while you travel then this is a pretty good option.
If you have a larger collection of music or wish to spend a bit more money you can't really go wrong with an iPod. They are very easy to use, stylish, and come with iTunes which makes it very easy to get your favourite tracks on them.
The only problems with getting an iPod is that sometimes they get corrupt and they are a bugger to fix (particularly if you are using a PC). Also you have to be careful about what format you use. iTunes can use MP3s and AACs. The AAC format is like MP3 but generally speaking only iTunes and iPods can use them.
Good luck and happy tuning!

Buy an ipod, better software, loads of accesories and a great UI, also, they are very cheap from Amazon.co.uk and if you look around at the price the ipod is cheaper, 30GB and video playback for £170, the only comparible player is the Creative Zen Video which is £250 and the only extras over the ipod are a FM radio. Dont get pulled in to the anti hype against the iPod, its the best selling for a reason.

Depends on whether you want a fashion accessory or a decent piece of kit. The I-pod breaks / battery dies / cracks (nano owners, you know who you are). I have a Sony player and it's never let me down. Plus it's a hell of a lot smaller and actually fits in your pocket, unlike that nasty piece of white plastic apple laughably call an MP3 player.
